Saunders: Even for high school students, domestic violence is a big issue

Saunders: Even for high school students, domestic violence is a big issue
It may be time to add another “r”: right cross, as in the kind too many high school girls have to duck when their boyfriends become violent.

It’s mind-blowing to even think about, but some girls in high school are having to learn to do that at an age when their main concerns should be which gown to wear to the prom or where they’ll go to college.
Ritu Kaur, a director of training and education for InterAct, a local group that works to help women extricate themselves from abusive relationships by providing shelter and information, said one in 10 girls in high school has been physically abused by a boyfriend. Even more have been verbally, emotionally or psychologically abused.

I talked to Kaur and Laura Hilton, InterAct’s director of community education, Wednesday at a march the group held in downtown Raleigh to commemorate the six women in Wake County who’ve been killed by husbands or boyfriends since May.

Hilton said that girls who are abused in high school are more likely to be abused as adults. Equally distressing is the realization that abusive dudes who can’t control their rage but want to control their high school sweethearts will continue abusing, too.

Abuse, a study cited by Kaur shows, is a despicable gift that keeps on giving. So, ladies, despite your mate’s tearful pleas, promises to never do it again and flowers, if he hits you once he is going to hit you again — unless he seeks professional help.

That’s precisely what one man did after reading the column I wrote last week about domestic violence.

‘He wants ... help’

Leigh Duque, InterAct’s executive director, told me that “a well-dressed, well-spoken, quiet-mannered man walked into InterAct and told us he is a perpetrator of domestic violence. That’s by no means a usual occurrence. ... We provide a lifeline of support for victims of domestic and sexual violence, but we are not a provider of services for abusers.

“As a direct result of reading your column, he’s identified his own behavior as abusive – and he wants to own it, get help, and change. We were able to connect him with the support he needs to take those steps.”

Erika Martin of Enloe High School knows more about domestic violence than any 18-year-old should. “Two of my friends were physically abused” and others were verbally abused, she said

Both types leave scars, although one leaves the type you can’t see.

That’s why, Martin said, Enloe’s Student Council is sponsoring a charity ball Saturday to raise money for InterAct.

Rumors say that she will tie the knot with Siddharth Roy Kapur

Rumours of Vidya Balan getting married to Siddharth Roy Kapur have resurfaced. Reports say that Vidya and the UTV top boss will tie the knot around December 18. It has also been said that Vidya's close friend, fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, has been roped in to design her wedding trousseau.

Though Vidya and her beau have not responded to the rumours, flower girl dress organza jewel close friends say that they are seriously considering to settle down as soon as possible.

Vidya and Siddharth have acknowledged their relationship in public. When a story of them being married already was reported in August last year, Siddharth had denied the news simply stating, "Nope, not true."

However, this time he is keeping mum. Is that just an admission of the news or is be bored of the rumours?

War veteran celebrates his 100th birthday at a Ewell care home

A man who fought with Monty in World War II celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday.
Jack Richardson fought at El Alamein, in Egypt, where victory over Rommel's forces marked a turning point in the Western Desert Campaign.
On Friday a party was held for Mr Richardson at the Elders Care Home, in Epsom Road, Ewell, where his wife Lillian turned 100 in 2010 shortly before her death.
The couple, who met on holiday on the Isle of Wight and tied the knot in 1938, had celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary together at the home maternity wedding dresses.
He joined the Territorial Army and soon after the couple settled in Ifield transferred to the Royal Artillery at the start of the Second World War.
He fought with the Eight Army, nicknamed the Desert Rats, at El Alamein where he remembers being sceptical about General Montgomery's decision at one stage to send in all the reserves - although it paid off.
Promoted to sergeant, he was away from home for five years and when he was demobbed returned, aged 33, with no qualifications, no job and just a kit bag on his shoulder.
But at last he was reunited with his beloved wife.
Born into a poor family in Clapham, at the age of 14 he had gone to work as a clerk at a chartered accountants and in his forties he passed the exams necessary to become an accountant.
The couple lived in Meadow Walk, Ewell, for 40 years before moving into Elders Care Home in 2005.
In a speech on Friday, the care manager’s husband John Mills said: "Jack is well loved here at the Elders and a wonderful person.
"He is the most kind, friendly and interesting person to have graced these walls, a credit to the home and is just how a true gentleman should be.
"Long live Jack."

Carrie Ann Inaba’s Blog: Dressing Up for a Sick Day

We’ve had lots of fun hearing about Carrie Ann Inaba‘s stunning Dancing with the Stars ensembles, and today, the judge gives us the exclusive details on what she wore Monday night – and how it helped her get through a bought with the flu (get well soon!):
This week: two dances in one! The fusion dance! And no elimination this week … because of the election. So don’t forget to get out there and make your votes count!
Unfortunately, Monday night, I wasn’t feeling 100 percent — there is bug going around and it bit me. So I needed a dress that would help me feel the best I could feel, all things considered. I had done an appearance on Saturday with Tom Bergeron at America’s Funniest Home Videos and on my way home got very sick and ended up spending the rest of the weekend in bed. I think it was just a flu bug, but it was still lingering on me Monday so I needed every boost I could get. So, I chose this beautiful purple hope wedding dress.
According to a website I often frequent about colors and their meaning (I redecorate a lot), purple is the color of good judgment. It is also the combination of both the cool tones of its blue base and the warmth and heat of its red base. It’s often been called a perfect color because it brings both sides of the spectrum together, and is often associated with the color of royalty.
It’s not an expensive dress; it’s designed by Adrianna Papell and runs for about $170 in the deeper plum color. I haven’t seen the exact price for this one since it’s a sample, but the color is what sold me on it. On the show, I like to wear a mixture of couture and affordable dresses. It keeps it fun … and it keeps things in perspective. I liked the softness of this one-shoulder dress — it was quite feminine and flowy. And the color felt regal.

The jewels were a lot of fun; [stylist] Kit Scarbo pulled some Erica Courtney jewelry for the evening. My yellow-gold earrings had 2.46 karats of white diamonds with coral drops surrounded by blue sapphires. I also wore three rings: one with 11.28 carats of amethyst placed in yellow gold, a yellow gold fleur-de-lis with 6.46 carats of opal and 1.24 carats of white diamonds and finally a carved pink coral rose ring valued at $9,600. (Editor’s note: Jealous!)
[Hair and makeup artists] Anna Maria and Jojo worked extra hard to get me show-ready and I appreciate the boost. We did a side-swept ‘do to go with the one-shoulder neckline of the dress and used a variety of iron sizes to get the curls loose and free looking. Jojo did a nice smoky eye thanks to our Tom Ford kit of eye shadows, plus a neutral lip. I wore some fun eyelashes, from Adoro, a brand you may never have heard of. We did a double lash, meaning two of them on each eye. Sometimes it adds to the effect. Just a little trick of the trade to share …
Hope you enjoyed the show and my fashion choice last night. Don’t forget to get out there and vote today. God bless you and we’ll see you next week.

Making dreams come true

Everything a bride- and groom-to-be need to plan their lives together is available right here in Thunder Bay, from dresses to financial planning homecoming dress shop online .
More than 100 companies and services were at the annual Wedding Wishes Formal Affair on Sunday to give couples planning to get married a comprehensive look at all facets of planning weddings, honeymoons and securing their futures together.
The Valhalla Inn was a hive of activity with hundreds of people perusing what the vendors had to offer and taking time to enjoy six fashion shows from local clothiers and boutiques, and two dance demonstrations by World Dance Centre.
“This is a one-stop shopping experience for all those who are planning their big day,” show manager Nancy Milani said in an interview.
“We have pretty much everything a bridal party needs to plan that perfect wedding, no matter where or when it is going to happen.”
Interest in planning larger, more elaborate weddings and destination weddings have grown in popularity. Milani said the wedding business has been picking up since the recession and couples want to have that dream wedding day.
She also attributed reality TV for the upswing in bigger weddings.
“There are so many shows out there and people see these big ceremonies and they want that too,” she said.
There was a draw for a $15,000 grand prize wedding package.
Creating and planning an elaborate wedding can be overwhelming for many couples. Professional planners like Bethanie Kramer, owner of You’re Invited Wedding and Event Consulting, said many couples start planning up to two years in advance and the cost can average $20,000 to $30,000 for the wedding day.
“It’s been a growing industry and it’s a service that has been growing in Thunder Bay,” she said.
“We are letting people know that there is help out there. Coming to this show can be overwhelming and I help them keep track of the planning and help them make sense of everything they are going to see.”
Kramer said she’s noticed more people are applying for marriage licences and coming to her with their ideas.
She said with more people planning marriages, they don’t want just a simple ceremony, they want to have fun.
There are so many options to choose from, including themes and destination weddings. She said she is currently working with a bride who wants a night club theme for her wedding. Destination weddings have become popular because they are a ceremony and vacation in one. Many resorts have planners on site to make the ceremony easy to organize.
While weddings are steeped in tradition, there are trends that follow the latest fashions and the reality of the times.
The all-important bridal dress has gone through many changes, said Josy Vaillant of Irma’s Bridal Boutique. She said some traditions have endured, like all-white dresses and veils, but the styles have changed to fit with modern tastes.
“This year, we are seeing a lot more mermaid-style gowns, lots of pearls, shimmer and various shades of white, from pearl, to mocha,” Vaillant said.
“More brides are also asking for sleeves, or false sleeves because of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, they want that same style, too.”
How dresses are designed is often a reflection of attitudes toward protocol.
Vaillant said that before the 1970s, brides were expected to be fully covered from head to toe to reflect the “virginal” look. During and after the 1970s and into the ’90s, puffy sleeves and sleeker dresses became popular. By the 1990s sleeveless dresses became standard issue in bridal shops.
“Most weddings and receptions happen at night and brides wanted a sleeveless gown for a more elegant look,” she said.
Another tradition changing with the times is the gift registry.
Couples still want to make gift selection easy for their guests, but the reasons may be different.
Richard Koskiniemi of The Kitchen Nook, which offers a bridal registry, was showcasing items that couples may want, from the practical to the more elaborate.
With gift registries, couples choose what items they want and make the list available to their guests so they can choose what to buy.
“In a store like ours, because we are so diverse, they are looking for practical things they can really use, like microwave and dishwasher safe tableware,” Koskiniemi said.
People are also getting married later in life, which can influence what they choose for their registry, he said.
A more mature couple may already have an established household, so they might choose something like the Tiffany line of stemware, or something they wouldn’t normally buy themselves.
“We can fill both sectors,” he said.

Drew R. Mulhearn, 27

SOUTH YARMOUTH — Drew R. Mulhearn, 27, of South Yarmouth, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, from a terrible accident, yet at the end Drew passed peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Drew was born in Worcester, one of two sons, to Patricia McNamara Mulhearn and Richard Mulhearn. Throughout his life, he had a very special bond and attachment with his older brother, Adam Mulhearn. Drew was fittingly the best man at Adam's wedding. Several years ago, Drew was fortunate to find the love of his life, his wife and friend Evelina Todorova-Mulhearn.
Drew graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School and went on to graduate from Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He was an engineer in the Merchant Marine.

Drew was an exceptionally bright man with a heart of gold. He loved the sea, and the excitement of the world that he spent his life exploring. He loved engineering. He loved fixing things and understanding the intricacies of how the physics of nature made things work together. No project was too hard to take on and he found great joy in understanding and using his profound talents to find the right solutions. He was active and spent every active moment exploring what life had to offer.
He loved the outdoors and the wonderful discoveries life had to offer. He loved to think about things and discuss life. He cared deeply about others and had a knack for understanding people. He was generous to a fault and very kind and sweet. He was hard working and extremely creative. His sense of humor was profound and a blessing to those around him. Most of all, Drew was a man who really cared about his family.
When Drew wasn't off to sea in his new maritime career, he and his wife split their time living in New Hampshire with his brother Adam and sister-in law Lisa, helping them with a total makeover of their new home, and the rest of the time living at his mother Patricia's home in South Yarmouth.
Drew will be sorely missed and remembered by the many he left behind, including his devoted and loving wife, Evelina Todorova-Mulhearn; loving mother Patricia McNamara Mulhearn; proud father Richard Mulhearn; proud and devoted brother and friend Adam Mulhearn; caring friend and sister-in-law Lisa Mulhearn; caring friend and stepmom Lynn Mulhearn; loving grandmother Dorothy McNamara Mulhearn; and parents-in-law, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, second cousins, and friends too numerous to mention here but just as important.
Drew entered this world prematurely, a premature baby, and he left this world much, much too soon. Drew is and will always be loved.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Saint Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth. Interment will follow in Woodside Cemetery, Yarmouthport.

'Uncle Bobby's Wedding' to stay on Brentwood shelves

Brentwood, MO (KSDK) - A controversial children's book is back in circulation after it was pulled from library shelves in Brentwood.

"Uncle Bobby's Wedding" tells the story of two male guinea pigs that get married. It was pulled after a parent complained saying the book influences young children to accept a harmful lifestyle.

The library removed the book, a standard procedure, while the board of directors assessed the situation.

On Thursday NewsChannel 5 learned directors voted unanimously to put it back on the shelves.

"The book came out in 2008. So it's been on our shelves for four years now and it's been checked out 10 times," says Library Director Vicki Woods. "So it's not new. It's been challenged at other libraries, and when it came out in 2008 I think it was the 9th most challenged book in 2008. So it's not unknown for controversy to follow the book."

Woods tells us she heard from the author, who is pleased the library is keeping it in the collection.

Wedding Planner at James Bond Hotel Says Couple Isn't Good Enough to Get Married There

Anyone who thinks it's always the bride who goes 'zilla and exhibits totally outrageous, cringe-worthy behavior while planning the Big Day has never witnessed just how wacko wedding vendors can get. As a bride-to-be and the friend of a couple of fellow 2013 brides-to-be, I've experienced and heard of some crazy episodes with people in the over-the-top wedding biz -- but nothing nearly as upsetting as what a U.K. couple recently had to endure ...
Twenty-seven-year-old bride-to-be Pauline Bailey and her 51-year-old fiance Paul Carty wanted to get hitched at the five-star Stoke Park Hotel, which has previously featured in Bridget Jones' Diary and James Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies and Goldfinger. After having met the couple, hotel wedding planner Michele Connelly decided Pauline and Paul weren't the right "kind of people" to be wed at the venue. She then wrote the following email to her boss ...
I need your advice. I know this probably doesn't sound very nice, but I am trying to put this wedding off as I don't think they are the type of people that we would want to have at Stoke Park. I spoke to the bride yesterday and have put her off for now by telling her the dates that she wants are not available. Help!!!
Ouch!!! But wait, there's SO MUCH MORE. When Michele went to hit "send," it turned out she had mistakenly cc'ed Pauline! Whoooops, huh?
Of course Pauline was in tears initially. She told The Daily Mail:
I was horrified. Effectively, Michele was asking her boss how she could get rid of us. The suggestion was that we were undesirables, which we definitely are not. We're a hard-working, well-educated couple, who both speak well. ... It's clear to me that this hotel operates a policy of discrimination, which is terribly wrong, unfair and deeply, deeply hurtful. Paul and I can hold our own anywhere and in anyone’s company. We are thoroughly decent people and didn’t deserve this humiliation.
No kidding! No one deserves to be turned away by a venue in this way. Sadly, it probably happens behind couples' backs more often than we realize ...
In this case, Pauline believes the discrimination was related to the fact that her fiancé is 24 years her senior and has a pierced eyebrow and two earrings. So ridiculous. Thankfully, they were bold enough to take the hotel to task for this disgraceful incident ...
They've considered legal action and have refused a meeting with the hotel's sales manager who apologized and requested a meeting to discuss their wedding plans. As Pauline explained, "After such a disgusting snub we wouldn't hold our wedding there, even if the hotel offered it for free." Good for them!

Paris Fashion Week: day two

Paris Fashion Week: day two

Blame all the recent elections, which pit man against man (or woman, in some cases), or simple boredom with the talk about austerity measures and bad job figures and so on and so forth, and the corresponding desire to drum up some drama, but either way this Paris Fashion Week is being framed, broadly, as a face-off between Raf Simons at Dior and Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent. The two designers will show their debut ready-to-wear collections for their respective historic houses this season: Simons on Friday and Slimane on Monday.

Indeed, though the men themselves have been doing their best to distance their brands from what they insist is a made-up media moment, to read the fashion (and even the mainstream) press, you’d think nothing else was going on.

High quality global journalism requires investment. Please share this article with others using the link below, do not cut & paste the article. See our Ts&Cs and Copyright Policy for more detail. Email ftsales.support@ft.com to buy additional rights.

hich is too bad; because the opening days of the Paris collections were actually very good. Didier Grumbach, president of the Chambre Syndicale, suggested the level of anticipation for the Simons/Slimane showdown might cause other designers to raise their game and, thus far at least, he has been proved right. Mostly.

Admittedly, this wasn’t the case for Rochas, where designer Marco Zanini seems to be retreating ever further into some idealised past world of perfumery. Cropped shirts were worn over hoop or hobble skirts; wide, ankle-length trousers came with midriff-baring tops; and a ballgown was reimagined as an enveloping taffeta shirtdress that looked like a couture schmatta and made no contemporary sense at all.

At least at Thierry Mugler creative director and ex-Gaga collaborator Nicola Formichetti and his womenswear designer Sébastien Peigné are inching their way past latex and showmanship and into more realistic territory via nipped-in mini-hourglass silhouettes and slick trousers, albeit with a Star Wars-in-Japan vibe. But it was at Gareth Pugh that the eponymous designer, often seen as a goth Mini-Me version of mentor Rick Owens, took an enormous step forward, adding dimensions and a soft romance to his repertoire.

So signature leather leggings were paired with sharp jackets that nipped in at the waist and soared up at the neck to swaddle the shoulders and frame the face; sleeves – and the lower legs of slick trousers – were trumpet flared and exaggerated; sleeveless handkerchief tunics in airy wool with fringed hemlines sported draped necks to the back; and dresses in strips of silk that drooped into balloon shades on the skirt skimmed the hips in a dancing silhouette.

It was as if Mr Pugh had finally realised elegance didn’t have to be worn as a challenge to the world; it could simply be assumed. This is a sartorial truth Ann Demeulemeester has always understood, and this season expressed to regal effect. Tailored jackets with flowing chiffon sleeves that created a train unto themselves, glinting trouser suits in amethyst and silver shantung, and billowing sleeveless silk dresses in cloudy sky shades, sometimes caught by a spidery leather harness – all were a potent reminder of the risk of overlooking the familiar in anticipation of the unknown.

In case you missed it, however, this was reinforced at Balenciaga, where with each piece designer Nicolas Ghesquière had a new point to make.

Dries van Noten Gives Grunge a High Fashion Makeover for Spring 2013

Dries van Noten Gives Grunge a High Fashion Makeover for Spring 2013

The Clothes: Grunge gone high fashion. We’ve seen a lot of ’90s rehash from designers this season but this was the best interpretation of the decade I’ve seen so far. Dries Van Noten took Seattle’s plaid flannel button down and made it sheer and sexy. Plaid then made its way onto loose pajama pants, dresses and long skirts and all of it was worn together: Plaid on plaid on plaid. Yet somehow, it worked. And when it wasn’t plaid, Van Noten, who is known for his prints, sprinkled in some florals–on sheer dusters and maxi dresses worn over plaid looks. Van Noten also turned out some of the best examples of pajama dress we’ve seen: A silk bathrobe was tucked into a busy skirt covered in gold fringe–perfect for the girl who partied too hard the night before and woke up 10 minutes before she had to run off to the next party. The vibe was relaxed, cozy and sexy all at the same time.

The Hair & Makeup: According to a tweet from Style.com, dark roots were painted on so stylist Paul Hanlon could achieve the “Courtney Love in Hole” look he was going for. Lips were a dark, matte red and many of the models wore white-framed sunglasses (because they were so chillax-ed OK?)

The Soundtrack: Since I have to use a Blackberry in Paris because Verizon and my iPhone 4 won’t cooperate, I couldn’t Shazam it. So I’ll have to rely on the Wall Street Journal‘s Meenal Mistry who informs that it was: Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ covered by The Cribs, the Breeders and Sonic Youth’s ‘Superstar.’ “Dries Van Noten had best soundtrack so far,” she tweeted. We’d have to agree.

The Vibe: For the past few seasons Dries van Noten has shown at the Hotel de Ville–the grandest most gilded most Baroque venue you could imagine in Paris. So it was fitting for this high fashion take on grunge that he switched it up and showed in a stark industrial space that felt like a parking garage. Also a thing about a Dries show: Everyone fangirls-out and wears Dries. So everyone looks awesome.

Oh what a life: Frankie Valli reflects on ‘Jersey Boys’

Oh what a life: Frankie Valli reflects on ‘Jersey Boys’

That’s what Frankie Valli found himself considering the first time he watched a run-through of “Jersey Boys,” the mega-hit Broadway musical that depicts Valli’s rise to fame in the 1960s with the band that would become famous as the Four Seasons.
“How would the word ‘strange’ sound to you?” Valli said the other day. “It’s like a reflection of yourself. You look in the mirror and all of a sudden the reflection you see in the mirror is doing you. And you’re just standing there watching.”
To call Valli an iconic figure in pop music might be an understatement. He and the Four Seasons scored 40 Top 40 hits, including eight singles that went to No. 1. Most of the songs were written by the group’s co-founder Bob Gaudio. Today many of them - “Walk Like a Man,” “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” - remain instantly recognizable. What makes them so, aside from Gaudio’s expert craftsmanship, are Valli’s utterly unique falsetto vocals.
But Valli said he didn’t realize he was doing anything special.
“The magic that may seem to be there was something that was normal and natural,” he said from a tour stop in Denver. “I never studied singing with anybody. And I never thought that what I was doing was so incredibly unique. I thought anybody singing could do it. It took me awhile to understand that. I had this wonderful gift, and I loved using it.
“I learned to sing by doing impressions, singing songs that I liked that the radio was playing. You liked the song and you wanted to sound like the person doing it. . If you could imitate four or five people, if you really worked on it you could probably do 15 or 20. But as I said, I never gave it a second thought. I thought all singers could do that.”
“Jersey Boys,” with which Valli and Gaudio were directly involved, is an international hit, and Valli said there are plans to adapt it as a film, which could begin shooting as early as January. In terms of the story, which depicts the group’s early struggles, the conflicts among bandmates, brushes with organized crime and eventual success as recording artists, Valli said the show is “95 percent accurate.”
For this concert tour, Valli is bringing a band that includes two guitars, a bass, drums, keyboards, a sax player, four singers and a small horn section. The audience, he said, will hear plenty of hits.

Amy Poehler Divorce Imminent? Star Steps Out Sans Wedding Ring

Amy Poehler Divorce Imminent? Star Steps Out Sans Wedding Ring

As far as post-split appearances go, Amy Poehler absolutely nailed it on the red carpet at the Emmys on Sunday evening. The "Parks and Recreation" star wore a sparkly black Stella McCartney gown with a plunging neckline and rocked a surprising piece of jewelry on her ring finger -- but it's not what you think.

"Oh, this is a $2 adjustable ring from my child's toy box," she told Ryan Seacrest. "He told me I should wear it, so I listen to him."

The Emmy's marked Poehler's first red-carpet appearance since announcing her separation from Will Arnett, her husband of nine years, earlier this month. The former couple has two children together -- sons Archie, 3, and Abel, 2.

Poehler was nominated for two awards -- Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her work on "Parks and Recreation." Arnett also received an Emmy nod for his guest role on "30 Rock."

Poehler is not the first celebrity to make a sexy red-carpet debut after a split. Click through the slides below to see six other stars who showed their exes exactly what they were missing post-divorce.

Top Mistakes Men Make When Dating After Divorce

Top Mistakes Men Make When Dating After Divorce

This is what I remembered about dating before marriage: I would go to one of the frat parties on a given weekend and hang out with a group of friends. There would be a really cute guy standing by the keg of beer, we would smile at one another, strike up a conversation and exchange phone numbers. He might call the next day to chat and then ask me to go to the toga party with him that weekend. If I were really lucky, he would ask me to hang out before the party to have a beer that wasn't from the tap and eat a burger at the local greasy joint. If we still liked one another then we would get together, study and go to more parties to "hang out." This was dating when I was in college and the only dating I really knew before marriage. Fast forward to dating after divorce, and everything is completely different.

Whether you married young like I did or had been in a long marriage, you may feel clueless about how to date again. It's like waking up from a coma and finding yourself in a foreign land, having to learn a new language and understand different social norms. I have experienced this first hand on bad dates with divorced men who are anxious and don't know what to do or say. Here are some common mistakes divorced men make on first dates:

Mistake #1: You negatively talk about your ex and the failed marriage. Divorce is never pleasant, and men usually have some unfavorable feelings towards their ex-wives. But there is nothing more unattractive than a man complaining about his previous relationship and his ex. Cynical statements about why the marriage didn't work out will make any potential partner run for the hills. Instead, focus on your date and discuss your interests and hobbies to get her excited about being with you. If she asks about your ex and marriage, keep your answer brief and positive and convey how you are looking forward to having a close relationship again. Then quickly move on to another topic and share fun, uplifting stories. Also, find good friends, family members or a therapist to discuss your hardships with so you don't find yourself dumping on your dates.

Mistake #2: You discuss your financial woes. Divorce often results in financial distress. Men may find themselves having to pay support, lawyer fees, selling and buying new homes and even switching jobs to accommodate the new arrangement. It's understandable that you are more aware of how to manage your money, but that doesn't mean you need to let your date know about your financial woes. Don't complain about how expensive the meal is and suggest that the woman to order an appetizer because after all, you have to pay your ex child support (yes, this actually happens)! Do your research before taking her out and find something that is affordable so that there is no angst when the bill arrives. Avoid talking about your job that is perhaps in jeopardy and instead focus on talking about what you like about your job and your passions. Overall, the topic of money should be avoided.

Mistake #3: You are continuously angry and self-absorbed with your own problems. Divorce is an emotional roller-coaster with many ups and downs. You might feel depressed, anxious, exhausted, embarrassed, guilty and/or overwhelmed at any given point in time. Be careful to not let those negative feelings and thoughts bleed into your dating life. Many of my female clients have stated that the number one reason they didn't want to go out on second date with a man is because he was very negative or had a depressed and angry attitude. Women like men who are positive, fun, humorous, optimistic and uplifting. Ask questions about her to see what makes her tick rather than pouring your heart out about all of your problems. If you've had a bad day at the office or a fight with your ex, shake it off before the date by talking to a friend, listening to music or going for a run. Make sure you are in a positive state of mind before going on the date. It's better to reschedule for another day if you are in a bad place to ensure a great first impression.

AP Exclusive: Unique tombs found in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Archaeologists have unearthed remnants of what they believe is a 1,000-year-old village on a jungle-covered mountaintop in the Philippines with limestone coffins of a type never before found in this Southeast Asian nation, officials said Thursday.
National Museum official Eusebio Dizon said the village on Mount Kamhantik, near Mulanay town in Quezon province, could be at least 1,000 years old based on U.S. carbon dating tests done on a human tooth found in 1 of 15 limestone graves he and other archaeologists have dug out since last year.
The discovery of the rectangular tombs, which were carved into limestone outcrops jutting from the forest ground, is important because it is the first indication that Filipinos at that time practiced a more advanced burial ritual than previously thought and that they used metal tools to carve the coffins.
Past archaeological discoveries have shown Filipinos of that era used wooden coffins in the country's mountainous north and earthen coffins and jars elsewhere, according to Dizon, who has done extensive archaeological work and studies in the Philippines and 27 other countries over the past 35 years.
Aside from the tombs, archaeologists have found thousands of shards of earthen jars, metal objects and bone fragments of humans, monkeys, wild pigs and other animals in the tombs. The limestone outcrops had round holes where wooden posts of houses or sheds may have once stood, Dizon told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview.
The tombs were similar to ancient sarcophagus, which have become popular tourist attractions in Egypt and Europe, although the ones found in Mulanay were simple box-like limestone coffins without mythological or elaborate human images on the tops and sides.
Archaeologists have only worked on a small portion of a five-hectare (12-acre) forest area, where Mulanay officials said more artifacts and limestone coffins could be buried.
A preliminary National Museum report said its top archaeologists found "a complex archaeological site with both habitation and burial remains from the period of approximately 10th to the 14th century ... the first of its kind in the Philippines having carved limestone tombs."
The discovery has been welcomed with excitement in Mulanay, a sleepy coastal town of 50,000 people in an impoverished mountainous region that until recently was best known as a major battleground between army troops and Marxist rebels.
"Before, if you mention this region, people will say 'Oh, that's NPA country,'" Mulanay Mayor Joselito Ojeda said, referring to the New People's Army rebels. "But that era is past and now we can erase that image and this archaeological site will be a big help."
Mulanay tourism officer Sanny Cortez said that after archaeologists have finished their work in a few years, his town plans to turn Mount Kamhantik's peak into an archaeological and ecotourism park. A museum would also be built nearby.

The Waimauku resident has her wedding dress in the Home Sewn exhibition which runs until September 26.

Organised by the New Zealand Fashion Museum, the event features 40 garments made by people for themselves or a member of the family, from the early 1930s to today.

Each exhibitor's story is recorded for visitors to read, accompanied with a photo of the garment as it was originally worn or with the pattern used to make it.

Linda can generally be found making clothes in her workroom for herself and family at the Waimauku home she's lived in for six years.

The classic craft and pastime has been a passion since she was 10 and she even entered her first dress a year later in the Milne and Choyce doll show.

She ordered it direct from Switzerland to make her wedding dress.

She opened her first boutique in Avondale in 1973 and ran a children's wear shop with her label Chippo in the 1980s and then her upstairs studio Millennium from the 1990s to 2003.

She was also nominated three times for the Benson and Hedges fashion awards and had a parade in the first New Zealand Fashion Week.

Making fashionable clothing continues to be an important part of Linda's life.

Her exhibition is based at the Nathan Gallery, 40 Customs St East, Britomart, Auckland.

The event is hosted by a charitable trust started by the museum's curator Doris De Pont.

Is your child seat installed correctly? Police offer help in securing parents' most precious cargo

LONG BRANCHSee this story on our tablet app for a video on child car seat installation from Monmouth Medical Center with New Jersey State Police. Go to app.com on your tablet to download our tablet app.
Apparently, installing a child safety seat these days is like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube – not many people can do it right.
Some of the estimates are alarming. For example, according to the National Safe Kids Campaign, four out of five child safety seats are used incorrectly, with an average of three mistakes made during installation of one seat.
“They’re (parents) always embarrassed when they find out,” said Lisa Madden, who oversees child car seat inspections at Monmouth Medical Center. The inspection program, offered to the public Tuesday, is coordinated with New Jersey State Police, which requires troopers to become certified in child car seat inspection.
Trooper Joan Bloom said certification requires three weeks of classes in order for troopers to teach parents how to install seats correctly. Free car safety seat inspections are held once a month at locations around the state.
Bloom said a common error being discovered is that seats aren’t anchored in place tightly enough.
John Kaczala, a Morganville parent, found that out personally when he had state police check his seats Tuesday at Monmouth Medical Center.
“I thought I had them installed properly, but they made them tighter,” Kaczala said. “One of the troopers actually got in the car, stood up and yanked on the straps to make it tighter. That will prevent less travel by the kids in the seats.”
Kaczala is no stranger to ferrying around kids – he is a father of 17-month-old triplets.
“We keep them in the same seats all the time. The middle one goes in first. We found that the easiest way,” Kaczala said, adding that he advises all parents to bring their seats to the professionals for inspection.
Police can also tell you whether the car seat you are using is being recalled for defects. At each inspection, they carry an updated list of seats with safety issues, and it’s one of the first things they check when a parent or caregiver arrives.

Choosing The Right Pair Of Gold Earrings For Your Sweetie

Choosing The Right Pair Of Gold Earrings For Your Sweetie
You can't go wrong buying a pair of gold earrings for your sweetheart. Gold earrings are timepieces that mark milestones in life and often carry with them a grave element of sentimental value. On a more practical level, gold earrings lend themselves to being suitable for all occasions, as well as any outfit.Gold itself is quite a peculiar metal. Unlike sterling silver, gold does not tarnish. In addition, those people who are allergic to certain metals or their skin is susceptible to staining because of certain metals, usually find that gold does not cause this problem and suits them just fine.

However, they must make sure and wear only gold earrings with a high gold content. Unfortunately, this makes the purchase more expensive, for 18K or 24K earrings are generally required in order to avoid an allergic reaction.Gold is very versatile and can easily be worked into any shape a metallurgist has in mind. The limit to shaping gold is only as restrained as the imagination of the metallurgist. One ounce of gold can be compressed into an extremely thin sheet that is ten square feet in size. Whether gold is hammered into thin sheets or strands, the metal still remains sturdy. The most important element of shopping for gold earrings is the karat factor.

Karats describe how pure the gold within a pair of earrings is; the higher the percentage of gold in the earrings, the larger the karat. The following are the most common Karat ratings you will encounter when shopping:24K = Pure Gold18K = 75% Gold (18 parts gold and 6 parts other metal)14K = 58.3% Gold (14 parts gold and 10 parts other metal)12K = 50% Gold (12 parts gold and 12 parts other metal)10K = 41.7% Gold (10 parts gold and 14 parts other metal)In the course of your shopping you will come across 14K gold frequently. 14K gold earrings tend to be the most popular because they contain more than 50% gold and are usually reasonably priced; not as expensive as 24K gold earrings and yet not cheap enough to be 10K earrings.
