Blame all the recent elections, which pit man against man (or woman, in some cases), or simple boredom with the talk about austerity measures and bad job figures and so on and so forth, and the corresponding desire to drum up some drama, but either way this Paris Fashion Week is being framed, broadly, as a face-off between Raf Simons at Dior and Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent. The two designers will show their debut ready-to-wear collections for their respective historic houses this season: Simons on Friday and Slimane on Monday.

Indeed, though the men themselves have been doing their best to distance their brands from what they insist is a made-up media moment, to read the fashion (and even the mainstream) press, you’d think nothing else was going on.

hich is too bad; because the opening days of the Paris collections were actually very good. Didier Grumbach, president of the Chambre Syndicale, suggested the level of anticipation for the Simons/Slimane showdown might cause other designers to raise their game and, thus far at least, he has been proved right. Mostly.

Admittedly, this wasn’t the case for Rochas, where designer Marco Zanini seems to be retreating ever further into some idealised past world of perfumery. Cropped shirts were worn over hoop or hobble skirts; wide, ankle-length trousers came with midriff-baring tops; and a ballgown was reimagined as an enveloping taffeta shirtdress that looked like a couture schmatta and made no contemporary sense at all.

At least at Thierry Mugler creative director and ex-Gaga collaborator Nicola Formichetti and his womenswear designer Sébastien Peigné are inching their way past latex and showmanship and into more realistic territory via nipped-in mini-hourglass silhouettes and slick trousers, albeit with a Star Wars-in-Japan vibe. But it was at Gareth Pugh that the eponymous designer, often seen as a goth Mini-Me version of mentor Rick Owens, took an enormous step forward, adding dimensions and a soft romance to his repertoire.

So signature leather leggings were paired with sharp jackets that nipped in at the waist and soared up at the neck to swaddle the shoulders and frame the face; sleeves – and the lower legs of slick trousers – were trumpet flared and exaggerated; sleeveless handkerchief tunics in airy wool with fringed hemlines sported draped necks to the back; and dresses in strips of silk that drooped into balloon shades on the skirt skimmed the hips in a dancing silhouette.

It was as if Mr Pugh had finally realised elegance didn’t have to be worn as a challenge to the world; it could simply be assumed. This is a sartorial truth Ann Demeulemeester has always understood, and this season expressed to regal effect. Tailored jackets with flowing chiffon sleeves that created a train unto themselves, glinting trouser suits in amethyst and silver shantung, and billowing sleeveless silk dresses in cloudy sky shades, sometimes caught by a spidery leather harness – all were a potent reminder of the risk of overlooking the familiar in anticipation of the unknown.

In case you missed it, however, this was reinforced at Balenciaga, where with each piece designer Nicolas Ghesquière had a new point to make.

Dries van Noten Gives Grunge a High Fashion Makeover for Spring 2013

Dries van Noten Gives Grunge a High Fashion Makeover for Spring 2013

The Clothes: Grunge gone high fashion. We’ve seen a lot of ’90s rehash from designers this season but this was the best interpretation of the decade I’ve seen so far. Dries Van Noten took Seattle’s plaid flannel button down and made it sheer and sexy. Plaid then made its way onto loose pajama pants, dresses and long skirts and all of it was worn together: Plaid on plaid on plaid. Yet somehow, it worked. And when it wasn’t plaid, Van Noten, who is known for his prints, sprinkled in some florals–on sheer dusters and maxi dresses worn over plaid looks. Van Noten also turned out some of the best examples of pajama dress we’ve seen: A silk bathrobe was tucked into a busy skirt covered in gold fringe–perfect for the girl who partied too hard the night before and woke up 10 minutes before she had to run off to the next party. The vibe was relaxed, cozy and sexy all at the same time.

The Hair & Makeup: According to a tweet from Style.com, dark roots were painted on so stylist Paul Hanlon could achieve the “Courtney Love in Hole” look he was going for. Lips were a dark, matte red and many of the models wore white-framed sunglasses (because they were so chillax-ed OK?)

The Soundtrack: Since I have to use a Blackberry in Paris because Verizon and my iPhone 4 won’t cooperate, I couldn’t Shazam it. So I’ll have to rely on the Wall Street Journal‘s Meenal Mistry who informs that it was: Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ covered by The Cribs, the Breeders and Sonic Youth’s ‘Superstar.’ “Dries Van Noten had best soundtrack so far,” she tweeted. We’d have to agree.

The Vibe: For the past few seasons Dries van Noten has shown at the Hotel de Ville–the grandest most gilded most Baroque venue you could imagine in Paris. So it was fitting for this high fashion take on grunge that he switched it up and showed in a stark industrial space that felt like a parking garage. Also a thing about a Dries show: Everyone fangirls-out and wears Dries. So everyone looks awesome.

Oh what a life: Frankie Valli reflects on ‘Jersey Boys’

Oh what a life: Frankie Valli reflects on ‘Jersey Boys’

That’s what Frankie Valli found himself considering the first time he watched a run-through of “Jersey Boys,” the mega-hit Broadway musical that depicts Valli’s rise to fame in the 1960s with the band that would become famous as the Four Seasons.
“How would the word ‘strange’ sound to you?” Valli said the other day. “It’s like a reflection of yourself. You look in the mirror and all of a sudden the reflection you see in the mirror is doing you. And you’re just standing there watching.”
To call Valli an iconic figure in pop music might be an understatement. He and the Four Seasons scored 40 Top 40 hits, including eight singles that went to No. 1. Most of the songs were written by the group’s co-founder Bob Gaudio. Today many of them - “Walk Like a Man,” “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” - remain instantly recognizable. What makes them so, aside from Gaudio’s expert craftsmanship, are Valli’s utterly unique falsetto vocals.
But Valli said he didn’t realize he was doing anything special.
“The magic that may seem to be there was something that was normal and natural,” he said from a tour stop in Denver. “I never studied singing with anybody. And I never thought that what I was doing was so incredibly unique. I thought anybody singing could do it. It took me awhile to understand that. I had this wonderful gift, and I loved using it.
“I learned to sing by doing impressions, singing songs that I liked that the radio was playing. You liked the song and you wanted to sound like the person doing it. . If you could imitate four or five people, if you really worked on it you could probably do 15 or 20. But as I said, I never gave it a second thought. I thought all singers could do that.”
“Jersey Boys,” with which Valli and Gaudio were directly involved, is an international hit, and Valli said there are plans to adapt it as a film, which could begin shooting as early as January. In terms of the story, which depicts the group’s early struggles, the conflicts among bandmates, brushes with organized crime and eventual success as recording artists, Valli said the show is “95 percent accurate.”
For this concert tour, Valli is bringing a band that includes two guitars, a bass, drums, keyboards, a sax player, four singers and a small horn section. The audience, he said, will hear plenty of hits.

Amy Poehler Divorce Imminent? Star Steps Out Sans Wedding Ring

Amy Poehler Divorce Imminent? Star Steps Out Sans Wedding Ring

As far as post-split appearances go, Amy Poehler absolutely nailed it on the red carpet at the Emmys on Sunday evening. The "Parks and Recreation" star wore a sparkly black Stella McCartney gown with a plunging neckline and rocked a surprising piece of jewelry on her ring finger -- but it's not what you think.

"Oh, this is a $2 adjustable ring from my child's toy box," she told Ryan Seacrest. "He told me I should wear it, so I listen to him."

The Emmy's marked Poehler's first red-carpet appearance since announcing her separation from Will Arnett, her husband of nine years, earlier this month. The former couple has two children together -- sons Archie, 3, and Abel, 2.

Poehler was nominated for two awards -- Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her work on "Parks and Recreation." Arnett also received an Emmy nod for his guest role on "30 Rock."

Poehler is not the first celebrity to make a sexy red-carpet debut after a split. Click through the slides below to see six other stars who showed their exes exactly what they were missing post-divorce.

Top Mistakes Men Make When Dating After Divorce

Top Mistakes Men Make When Dating After Divorce

This is what I remembered about dating before marriage: I would go to one of the frat parties on a given weekend and hang out with a group of friends. There would be a really cute guy standing by the keg of beer, we would smile at one another, strike up a conversation and exchange phone numbers. He might call the next day to chat and then ask me to go to the toga party with him that weekend. If I were really lucky, he would ask me to hang out before the party to have a beer that wasn't from the tap and eat a burger at the local greasy joint. If we still liked one another then we would get together, study and go to more parties to "hang out." This was dating when I was in college and the only dating I really knew before marriage. Fast forward to dating after divorce, and everything is completely different.

Whether you married young like I did or had been in a long marriage, you may feel clueless about how to date again. It's like waking up from a coma and finding yourself in a foreign land, having to learn a new language and understand different social norms. I have experienced this first hand on bad dates with divorced men who are anxious and don't know what to do or say. Here are some common mistakes divorced men make on first dates:

Mistake #1: You negatively talk about your ex and the failed marriage. Divorce is never pleasant, and men usually have some unfavorable feelings towards their ex-wives. But there is nothing more unattractive than a man complaining about his previous relationship and his ex. Cynical statements about why the marriage didn't work out will make any potential partner run for the hills. Instead, focus on your date and discuss your interests and hobbies to get her excited about being with you. If she asks about your ex and marriage, keep your answer brief and positive and convey how you are looking forward to having a close relationship again. Then quickly move on to another topic and share fun, uplifting stories. Also, find good friends, family members or a therapist to discuss your hardships with so you don't find yourself dumping on your dates.

Mistake #2: You discuss your financial woes. Divorce often results in financial distress. Men may find themselves having to pay support, lawyer fees, selling and buying new homes and even switching jobs to accommodate the new arrangement. It's understandable that you are more aware of how to manage your money, but that doesn't mean you need to let your date know about your financial woes. Don't complain about how expensive the meal is and suggest that the woman to order an appetizer because after all, you have to pay your ex child support (yes, this actually happens)! Do your research before taking her out and find something that is affordable so that there is no angst when the bill arrives. Avoid talking about your job that is perhaps in jeopardy and instead focus on talking about what you like about your job and your passions. Overall, the topic of money should be avoided.

Mistake #3: You are continuously angry and self-absorbed with your own problems. Divorce is an emotional roller-coaster with many ups and downs. You might feel depressed, anxious, exhausted, embarrassed, guilty and/or overwhelmed at any given point in time. Be careful to not let those negative feelings and thoughts bleed into your dating life. Many of my female clients have stated that the number one reason they didn't want to go out on second date with a man is because he was very negative or had a depressed and angry attitude. Women like men who are positive, fun, humorous, optimistic and uplifting. Ask questions about her to see what makes her tick rather than pouring your heart out about all of your problems. If you've had a bad day at the office or a fight with your ex, shake it off before the date by talking to a friend, listening to music or going for a run. Make sure you are in a positive state of mind before going on the date. It's better to reschedule for another day if you are in a bad place to ensure a great first impression.

AP Exclusive: Unique tombs found in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Archaeologists have unearthed remnants of what they believe is a 1,000-year-old village on a jungle-covered mountaintop in the Philippines with limestone coffins of a type never before found in this Southeast Asian nation, officials said Thursday.
National Museum official Eusebio Dizon said the village on Mount Kamhantik, near Mulanay town in Quezon province, could be at least 1,000 years old based on U.S. carbon dating tests done on a human tooth found in 1 of 15 limestone graves he and other archaeologists have dug out since last year.
The discovery of the rectangular tombs, which were carved into limestone outcrops jutting from the forest ground, is important because it is the first indication that Filipinos at that time practiced a more advanced burial ritual than previously thought and that they used metal tools to carve the coffins.
Past archaeological discoveries have shown Filipinos of that era used wooden coffins in the country's mountainous north and earthen coffins and jars elsewhere, according to Dizon, who has done extensive archaeological work and studies in the Philippines and 27 other countries over the past 35 years.
Aside from the tombs, archaeologists have found thousands of shards of earthen jars, metal objects and bone fragments of humans, monkeys, wild pigs and other animals in the tombs. The limestone outcrops had round holes where wooden posts of houses or sheds may have once stood, Dizon told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview.
The tombs were similar to ancient sarcophagus, which have become popular tourist attractions in Egypt and Europe, although the ones found in Mulanay were simple box-like limestone coffins without mythological or elaborate human images on the tops and sides.
Archaeologists have only worked on a small portion of a five-hectare (12-acre) forest area, where Mulanay officials said more artifacts and limestone coffins could be buried.
A preliminary National Museum report said its top archaeologists found "a complex archaeological site with both habitation and burial remains from the period of approximately 10th to the 14th century ... the first of its kind in the Philippines having carved limestone tombs."
The discovery has been welcomed with excitement in Mulanay, a sleepy coastal town of 50,000 people in an impoverished mountainous region that until recently was best known as a major battleground between army troops and Marxist rebels.
"Before, if you mention this region, people will say 'Oh, that's NPA country,'" Mulanay Mayor Joselito Ojeda said, referring to the New People's Army rebels. "But that era is past and now we can erase that image and this archaeological site will be a big help."
Mulanay tourism officer Sanny Cortez said that after archaeologists have finished their work in a few years, his town plans to turn Mount Kamhantik's peak into an archaeological and ecotourism park. A museum would also be built nearby.

Home sewing on display

Linda Evans has a close connection with a Kiwi fashion showcase.

The Waimauku resident has her wedding dress in the Home Sewn exhibition which runs until September 26.

Organised by the New Zealand Fashion Museum, the event features 40 garments made by people for themselves or a member of the family, from the early 1930s to today.

Each exhibitor's story is recorded for visitors to read, accompanied with a photo of the garment as it was originally worn or with the pattern used to make it.

Linda can generally be found making clothes in her workroom for herself and family at the Waimauku home she's lived in for six years.

She also tends to her large garden.

The classic craft and pastime has been a passion since she was 10 and she even entered her first dress a year later in the Milne and Choyce doll show.

She started working in the Bendon design workroom in 1969 as an assistant and while there, spotted a sample of floral cotton.

She ordered it direct from Switzerland to make her wedding dress.

She opened her first boutique in Avondale in 1973 and ran a children's wear shop with her label Chippo in the 1980s and then her upstairs studio Millennium from the 1990s to 2003.

She was also nominated three times for the Benson and Hedges fashion awards and had a parade in the first New Zealand Fashion Week.

Making fashionable clothing continues to be an important part of Linda's life.

Her exhibition is based at the Nathan Gallery, 40 Customs St East, Britomart, Auckland.

The event is hosted by a charitable trust started by the museum's curator Doris De Pont.

Is your child seat installed correctly? Police offer help in securing parents' most precious cargo

LONG BRANCHSee this story on our tablet app for a video on child car seat installation from Monmouth Medical Center with New Jersey State Police. Go to app.com on your tablet to download our tablet app.
Apparently, installing a child safety seat these days is like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube – not many people can do it right.
Some of the estimates are alarming. For example, according to the National Safe Kids Campaign, four out of five child safety seats are used incorrectly, with an average of three mistakes made during installation of one seat.
“They’re (parents) always embarrassed when they find out,” said Lisa Madden, who oversees child car seat inspections at Monmouth Medical Center. The inspection program, offered to the public Tuesday, is coordinated with New Jersey State Police, which requires troopers to become certified in child car seat inspection.
Trooper Joan Bloom said certification requires three weeks of classes in order for troopers to teach parents how to install seats correctly. Free car safety seat inspections are held once a month at locations around the state.
Bloom said a common error being discovered is that seats aren’t anchored in place tightly enough.
John Kaczala, a Morganville parent, found that out personally when he had state police check his seats Tuesday at Monmouth Medical Center.
“I thought I had them installed properly, but they made them tighter,” Kaczala said. “One of the troopers actually got in the car, stood up and yanked on the straps to make it tighter. That will prevent less travel by the kids in the seats.”
Kaczala is no stranger to ferrying around kids – he is a father of 17-month-old triplets.
“We keep them in the same seats all the time. The middle one goes in first. We found that the easiest way,” Kaczala said, adding that he advises all parents to bring their seats to the professionals for inspection.
Police can also tell you whether the car seat you are using is being recalled for defects. At each inspection, they carry an updated list of seats with safety issues, and it’s one of the first things they check when a parent or caregiver arrives.

Choosing The Right Pair Of Gold Earrings For Your Sweetie

Choosing The Right Pair Of Gold Earrings For Your Sweetie
You can't go wrong buying a pair of gold earrings for your sweetheart. Gold earrings are timepieces that mark milestones in life and often carry with them a grave element of sentimental value. On a more practical level, gold earrings lend themselves to being suitable for all occasions, as well as any outfit.Gold itself is quite a peculiar metal. Unlike sterling silver, gold does not tarnish. In addition, those people who are allergic to certain metals or their skin is susceptible to staining because of certain metals, usually find that gold does not cause this problem and suits them just fine.

However, they must make sure and wear only gold earrings with a high gold content. Unfortunately, this makes the purchase more expensive, for 18K or 24K earrings are generally required in order to avoid an allergic reaction.Gold is very versatile and can easily be worked into any shape a metallurgist has in mind. The limit to shaping gold is only as restrained as the imagination of the metallurgist. One ounce of gold can be compressed into an extremely thin sheet that is ten square feet in size. Whether gold is hammered into thin sheets or strands, the metal still remains sturdy. The most important element of shopping for gold earrings is the karat factor.

Karats describe how pure the gold within a pair of earrings is; the higher the percentage of gold in the earrings, the larger the karat. The following are the most common Karat ratings you will encounter when shopping:24K = Pure Gold18K = 75% Gold (18 parts gold and 6 parts other metal)14K = 58.3% Gold (14 parts gold and 10 parts other metal)12K = 50% Gold (12 parts gold and 12 parts other metal)10K = 41.7% Gold (10 parts gold and 14 parts other metal)In the course of your shopping you will come across 14K gold frequently. 14K gold earrings tend to be the most popular because they contain more than 50% gold and are usually reasonably priced; not as expensive as 24K gold earrings and yet not cheap enough to be 10K earrings.
